On occasion our brides have difficulty choosing their wedding flowers. They could go for the most colorful, the rarest, the most fragrant, the unscented or simply the most cost-effective choice. The 2018 brides are choosing many different types of foliage and looking for cost-effective ideas.  Although there are many choices, the season will affect what flowers may be available. Some blooms are seasonal and hard to get at certain months of the year.  This is where you florist can be a valuable resource for wedding flowers.

Most of our brides have some idea of their top choices when they meet with the florist. He or she can guide them to choose just the right ones which would be perfect for their bridal theme.  Here is a bit of trivia about how the bridal floral custom began: We also urge all brides to consider a wedding day coordinator to make sure all flowers arrive on time and on-budget.  Waiting for flowers on the wedding day is “not” a place any bride wants to be.  The day of wedding coordinator will cover this detail and others to prevent these issues from happening on the wedding day.  We would be honored to be considered as you make this important choice.

Why are flowers a huge part of the wedding ceremony?

Years ago, back in the 1600s, flowers became a part of a wedding ceremony out of necessity.  It was most important for couples on their special day to smell wonderful. Since most weddings were held outside and many in the summertime, it was very hot and with the heavy clothing, everyone became hot and sweaty. People back then did not bathe as frequently as we do today.  The florals on the wedding day including the bridal bouquet was used to mask the smell of any body odor.

Flowers were also thought to be able to ward off evil spirits. They believed that one bouquet could eliminate all evil sprits around the couple.  So there you have it.  We have come a long way since then and today we use many different types of flowers to commemorate our love and affection.

The Rose:

The rose represents true love and has long been known as the epitome of beauty.  It symbolizes passion and works well for both cinderella, fairy tale themed weddings and vintage, romantic nuptials. The rose comes in all colors. There are over 3,000 varieties and roses are easy to get and most are grown commercially. You can easily see why it is chosen most often for weddings.

The Calla Lily:

This flower is found in many avant guard events and is also known as the arum lily.  It is elegant, shaped like a trumpet and originated in Africa.  It represents beauty and is depicted in Art Nouveau and Art Deco themes around the globe. The most popular type is the larger flowers with a long, smooth stem.   Calla lilies are found in many table arrangements and the color most chosen is a creamy ivory color.  They come in other colors like yellow, mauve-pink and even dark purple.

Lily of the valley:

The lily of the valley is a flower which is bell-shaped with smaller flowers inside and a small, think stem. It has a fresh scent from the smaller flowers.  It is a popular choice for springtime weddings and is available mainly in spring.  It is hard to find this floral choice in the wintery months and it is also extremely expensive.  It comes in white as well as a soft rosy pink color.

The Peony:

This flower is a bright color and has a large head. The perfumed scent is very strong.  The victorian meaning of this flower is “bashfulness.”  It was first developed in Asia and was soon found in the French countryside.

A bouquet made of peonies can be beautiful but it does not last as long as other blooms and must be cut carefully to prolong the color and smell. It is only available in spring and summer, but must be imported to use in other seasons. This flower as well as the cali lily is very expensive to use in wedding bouquets or for table centerpieces.

Using Hydrangeas for your wedding:

The flowers are gorgeous and have a big large head. This flower comes in white, sky blue and other deeper shades of blue, burgundy, soft purple, and bright pink.  In the victorian language of flowers, the Hydrangeas represents “vanity.”  The color is derived out of the acid level from the soil it was grown from.  It also makes a statement as a boutonniere for the groom and the groomsmen.  Mothers also enjoy this flower for their corsage for the wedding. This is a popular choice for weddings since it is moderately prices and works well for all wedding themes.

Ranunculus flowers:

This floral choice is a cost-effective choice and an alternative to peonies or other more expensive flowers. The Ranunculus is a relative of the buttercup. They have a sweet mild scent and in the language of flowers means “I am dazzled by your charms.”  This is a great choice for bridal bouquets and boutonnieres as well. They are available in many different colors such as white, yellow, orange and pick.

The Stephanotis:

The meaning for this flower in the victorian language of flowers is “martial happiness.”  This may be one of the reasons it is often chosen for bridal flowers.  It is a dainty choice, and the color is white.  These flowers must be individually wrapped and prepared for bouquets since they grow on a flowering vine.  It is most popular for boutonnieres in a classy and formal evening wedding. The cost for this flower is mainly in the actual labor for preparation. It is available year round but requires assembly and must be placed into a special holder for the bride to use this in her bouquet.

The Sweet Pea flower:

The Sweet Pea represents “lasting pleasure.”  These flowers were brought to England from Italy in 1699. The English love this flower and use it in most wedding celebrations.  It is a delicate and colorful bloom with a candy-like scent.  The ruffled blossoms makes this flower a perfect choice for victorian brides.  It is also a great choice for the bridesmaids and the flower girls.  The sweet pea comes in many colors which include pink to purple.

The Gardenia:

Last but certainly not least is the beautiful gardenia.  This flower is surrounded by green leaves and has a sweet and sultry scent.  Gardenias, today, are a favorite choice to use in the bride’s hair and for other accessories.  The downside to this floral choice is that it will bruise easily and if not handled properly will not keep its lovely blossom.  The gardenia comes in large blossoms and there is a miniature variety too.  They are available in most climates and florist depend upon this flower to add a touch of glam to wedding table decor as well.
